Bailey bridge crossbeams are typically made of H350 steel. Each crossbeam has four sets of clamps to define the position of the bridge deck or longitudinal beams. Short columns are welded to both ends for connecting diagonal braces, and each end has three recesses on its bottom surface. During installation, the recesses are inserted into the studs on the crossbeam pads of the lower chord of the truss, positioning the crossbeam on the truss. The spacing of the recesses matches the truss spacing, thus fixing the truss spacing once the crossbeam is in place.
